Singing River...What?

Have you gotten any weird looks when you invite someone to visit with us at Singing River church of Christ? Singing River seems to catch people off guard or at least a little unprepared. A quick Google search reveals a multitude of things is affiliated with this regional phrase - Singing River Dentistry, Singing River Electrical Co-op, Singing River Cancer Center, etc., but none of these are immediately connected with the Church. Our name as the Singing River church of Christ is unique and the more we invite others the more it can become synonymous with a place of faith, hope, and love. Our aim is not to trick anyone or to use gimmicks to draw them, but rather to use the simplicity of the gospel.

We are a blessed congregation of the Lord’s body. The gospel of Jesus Christ continues to be taught with boldness and love, and the fruit of this work has been shown in God’s power to save those who were lost. We have grown spiritually and physically stronger as we have joined one another as brothers and sisters in Christ. The congregation’s strength and maturity was manifested in the processes of appointing both elders and deacons. Our elders are faithful men of God whose greatest desire is for the success of each individual soul who attends at Singing River. Our deacons are faithful men of God who work hard to ensure that nothing hinders the preaching and teaching of the gospel, or the relationship we share with one another.

We believe in the authority of the Scriptures. We believe that the work, organization, and worship of the New Testament church is to be strictly guided by the pattern revealed in the New Testament. Our worship is not determined by man’s opinions or the latest fad, but rather as God authorized in the New Testament. Our work in the preaching of the gospel is according to the pattern demonstrated in the New Testament. The organization of this local congregation is guided by the direction of the apostle Paul – “Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons” (Philippians 1:1). Our desire is to replicate what was found in the early church as closely as possible. The apostle Paul wrote – “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father” (Colossians 3:17). May God bless our efforts to do exactly this in our work at Singing River!

The anxious and nervous feelings of those first couple of weeks have been replaced with our devotion to God and toward one another. We continue to grow closer together each day, week, and month as a loving family of God. We have experienced both loss and growth, death and life, trial and success, as a young congregation. We grieve with those who lost their family members, and we rejoice with those who have been added to the kingdom. We weep with those who have moved away, but we rejoice with their new jobs and possibilities. The prayers of so many have been answered in the peaceful union and merger of Singing River. Thanks be to God for giving us this opportunity to work and worship together as His children and may everything we do be accomplished by His will and to His glory!
