The Safest City in the World

But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem..." (Hebrews 12:22).

If you have put on Christ in baptism (Galatians 3:27); if you are a member of His body, or His church (1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 1:22-23); if you are a stone in His spiritual temple (1 Peter 2:5), then you are a citizen of this great city (Ephesians 2:19; Philippians 3:20).

And if you are a citizen of this great city, this holy city, you have no reason to fear. No reason to fear even the most violent persecutors. No reason to fear "natural" disasters like tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis. No reason to fear even the most dreadful and deadly diseases. It's not that you're suddenly immune from anything bad happening to you. The fact is, you could suffer an untimely death from any of the above, but the Lord is with you and He will take care of you (Hebrews 13:5-6). He may not deliver or rescue you from some present danger, but He will deliver you eternally (2 Timothy 4:16-18).

Read carefully these words from the prophet Zephaniah, as he looked ahead to the time of Christ, to the time when this new Jerusalem, this spiritual city would be established.

"Sing, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem! The LORD has taken away your judgments, He has cast out your enemy. The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; You shall see disaster no more. In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: 'Do not fear; Zion, let not your hands be weak. The LORD your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.'" (Zephaniah 3:14-17).
